Friends of Daley Ranch Board Meeting Minutes
November 20, 2008
Present: Fred Woods, Rick Paul, Sally Thomas, Mike Whalen, Tracey Brown, Rick Mercurio
Fred opened the meeting at 7 p.m. at the Train Depot in Grape Day Park, Escondido. The minutes from the October meeting were approved as written. Rick M. shared the FODR group email list, and the Board decided to add a few more names. Also, Rick M. added to the mailing database a long list of people who signed up for a complimentary newsletter at Grape Day, and these will be identified as such under the “renewal” field.
Rick Paul will send a treasurer’s report by email. Fred delivered $47.05 cash from the iron ranger for plant guide “sales.” Rick P. said that FODR received a bill for web hosting. Rick M moved to allocate $94.80 for this, and Mike seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Rick P. and others attended a City Council meeting Nov. 19 to publicly thank the Council for financing the restoration of the ranch house. He also presented each council member with a complimentary Daley Ranch tee-shirt. There are still questions about the City’s intentions for the use of the ranch house, and Rick P. said he would continue to inquire about this.
Fred reported that Del Dios Middle School sent 140 sixth graders to Daley Ranch on Nov. 13. He said it was a successful event, and the Friends paid for lunches for the rangers and the volunteers. Other schools will visit the ranch this spring.
The Board discussed the Von Seggren property near Lake Wohlford. The property has been taken off the market and the Von Seggrens are attempting to have the land annexed to the City. Fred noted that the part of the land formerly used as a paintball field is in need of major clean up work. The Board has previously expressed an interest in this land as a potentially important segment of a wildlife corridor that connects Daley Ranch to open spaces to the east. We will keep an eye on what happens there.
Fred said he is still working on an official budget for FODR. The Board thanked Fred for completing a grant application from Cox Communication to help fund school visits to the ranch.
The next meeting will be Jan. 24 at Rick Paul’s home following an outing to the ranch by the Board. We plan to meet at the La Honda entrance at about 8:30 a.m.
